Participation in the Annual Reception of the American Jewish Committee in New York

12 June 2026 News

On June 11, 2026, the Consul General of the Republic of Bulgaria in New York, Angel Angelov, participated in the Annual Reception of AJC New York, one of the leading organizations of the Jewish community in the United States. The event brought together approximately 400 participants, including representatives of local government, the diplomatic corps, religious and civic organizations, as well as members of the business and academic communities.

This year’s reception focused on leadership in a time of rising antisemitism and on efforts to counter hate speech and hate crimes. A central part of the program was a discussion featuring the co-chairs of the New York City Council’s Task Force to Combat Antisemitism, Council Members Eric Dinowitz and Inna Vernikov.

The Consul General of Bulgaria had the opportunity to briefly participate in the discussion. He highlighted Bulgaria’s historic rescue of nearly 50,000 Bulgarian Jews during the Second World War and raised the question of what practical lessons New York could draw from this example in building broad-based coalitions against antisemitism and hate.

In response, the panelists emphasized the importance of historical examples of cooperation among public institutions, faith communities, and civil society, noting that the development of broad coalitions remains one of the Task Force’s key priorities.

On the margins of the event, the Consul General held discussions with members of AJC’s leadership, including the organization’s President Robert Skolnik, President-Elect Cindy Shainfeld, and other prominent leaders of the American Jewish community. AJC representatives expressed their appreciation for the active cooperation with the Consulate General of the Republic of Bulgaria in New York and reaffirmed their interest in developing new joint initiatives.

Deputy Consul General Daniela Sirakova also attended the event and held meetings with representatives of AJC’s Bulgaria Liaison Committee.

The invitation to participate and the active engagement of the Bulgarian side in the discussion confirmed the high level of relations between the Consulate General in New York and the American Jewish Committee, as well as the continued interest in Bulgaria’s historical example as a model of tolerance, civic responsibility, and intercommunal cooperation.
