16 December 2024 News

In recent days, the public in New York had the opportunity to enjoy several performances by Bulgarian jazz musicians:

On December 6, Nikola Gruev – Kotarashki, together with Dan Brantigan, a world-renowned trumpeter and Grammy nominee, gave a concert at the Bulgarian bar “Mehanata” in Manhattan, which was attended by many representatives of the Bulgarian community and their friends. The work of Nikola Gruev – Kotarashki, a former architect and current musician, combines original recordings with electronic music, hip-hop, jazz and other musical genres. Kotarashki’s debut album “Opa Hey” stayed among the most sought-after albums for five months and reached third place in the European World Music chart.

On December 9, The Consulate General of Bulgaria in New York held a premiere screening for the United States of the documentary film "Balkan Black Box". Tsvetan Dragnev's film tells the amazing story of Nikola Gruev - Kotarashki. Kotarashki was present at the screening in person and spoke with the guests about his work and music.

On December 10 of this year, a very successful jazz concert by the Wladigerov brothers took place in New York. The brothers were joined by other musicians, including Petar Slavov - son (jazz musician - double bassist, composer and arranger, one of the most popular Bulgarian jazzmen on the contemporary world jazz scene, living in New York since 2006). The occasion for the concert, which is part of the brothers' tour in the United States, was the celebration of the 125th anniversary of the birth of the Bulgarian composer, conductor, teacher and public figure of Bulgarian-Jewish origin, Prof. Pancho Vladigerov. The Consul General in New York Angel Angelov welcomed the guests to the concert and noted how the Bulgarian community in New York has been celebrating the contribution of Prof. Vladigerov.

On December 12 of this year, the now traditional Christmas jazz concert of “The Shrinks” took place at Consulate General of Bulgaria in New York. The band was founded by psychiatry students in 2000. Other performers also participated, one of whom Grammy nominated, with musical performances. The stage was richly decorated for the holidays and special lighting was used, including three installations with the colors of the Bulgarian flag. The guests tried Bulgarian banitsa prepared by the team of the Bulgarian Consulate General.
