The prestigious Columbia University in New York once again hosted an event about Bulgaria

07 February 2024 News

On 3 February this year a literary event was held at Columbia University in New York with Angela Rodel, a winner, together with the writer Georgi Gospodinov, of the prestigious International Booker Prize for 2023. The meeting took place during Rodel's visit to the USA to present an English translation of the novel "The Case of Cem" by Vera Mutafchieva. Similar events have also been organized in the consular district of CG-NY, at New York's iconic Rizzoli bookstore, Yale University, and a Boston bookstore.

The discussion was moderated by Prof. Valentina Izmirlieva, Director of the Harriman Institute at Columbia University. Together with Angela Rodel, they read several texts in Bulgarian and English. Philadelphia-based young and very talented author Joanna Elmi also joined in by reading an excerpt from her book.

The world-renowned translator shared with an overflowing hall of people her love for Bulgarian literature and her work on the books of Bulgarian authors such as Georgi Gospodinov, Vera Mutafchieva, Georgi Markov, Joanna Elmi, Ivan Hristov and others. The challenges of a translator from Bulgarian and her role in promoting our literature were also discussed.

The Consul General in New York, Angel Angelov, welcomed the commitment of the Harriman Institute to the promotion of Bulgarian culture (a number of events related to Bulgaria took place last year, including presentations of authors and film screenings) and thanked Angela Rodel for the inspiring example and for that she showed how important and valued the work of translators is.
