Initiatives of the Consulate Genera of Bulgaria in New York for the month of September

14 September 2022 News

Since the beginning of September, the Consulate General of Bulgaria in New York has taken part in a number of cultural and educational events within its consular district.

Special attention was paid to the beginning of the school year at the Bulgarian Sunday schools in the Northeastern part of the US, which opened their doors (for in-person and online classes) for those children who want to learn Bulgarian language, history, songs and dances.

The Consul General had the pleasure to participate in the presentation of the book “Time Shelter” by the world-renowned Bulgarian writer Georgi Gospodinov. The event was held in the New York Library in front of a large audience, incl. many Bulgarians. The discussion was moderated by Ms. Valentina Izmirlieva, Director of the Columbia University Harriman Institute.

The Consulate General reiterated its support for the Bulgarian Concert Evenings in New York, held monthly at the consulate. Traditionally the concerts feature Bulgarian and foreign musicians performing music by Bulgarian and world-famous composers.

On the occasion of the Bulgarian Unification Day the Consulate General launched “Take a Book Share a Book” library, an initiative, which was welcomed by the Bulgarian community. A number of books have already been donated to the library. A separate small library of children’s books was created as part of an educational children’s corner. Additionally, a small collection of CDs and DVDs containing Bulgarian music (opera, folklore and pop), films and educational materials has been displayed at the consulate.

The Consulate General proudly shared with the community information about the success of Ms. Valentina Asenov, a student of Bulgarian descent from New Jersey, whose charcoal piece, titled "Nature Mort" won first prize at a prestigious art contest, organized by the US Congress. Her artwork is on display at the US Capitol Building Congress for a year. A replica of the painting will also be displayed in the building of the Consulate General.
