26 November 2025 News

On November 22, 2025 the premiere screening of the Bulgarian film “Wedlock” took place at the Art Gallery in Ottawa. The film was selected among many others to represent Bulgaria during the 2025 EU Film Festival in Canada. It was created by the Bulgarian director and producer Mrs. Magdalena Ralcheva and has already received several awards as Best Feature Film (Critics Guild Award) and Golden Rose Bulgarian Feature Film Festival 2024. The film is based on the book of the very acclaimed and famous Bulgarian writer, historian and anthropologist Nikolay Haitov and features both prominent and well-known Bulgarian actors as well as young and promising ones.

H.E. Plamen Georgiev, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Bulgaria to Canada presented the film “Wedding” before the audience and briefed it about the production, its creators and the messages to the viewer it dispatches. As a special gift to the audience in Ottawa, a video message from the director of the film Ms. Magdalena Ralcheva was also screened before the movie.

It should be noted that this 40th edition of the European Film Festival is a special anniversary edition, with 28 films participating. As a gesture towards Ukraine, the Festival will end with a screening of the Ukrainian film “Porcelain War”.

The screening of the Bulgarian film “Wedlock” enjoyed high attendance and received excellent reviews by the audience. Along with the screening in Ottawa, the Bulgarian film was presented under the 2025 EUFF in Toronto and Vancouver as well.

On behalf of the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria in Ottawa and the Consulate General of the Republic of Bulgaria in Toronto we express our gratitude to the director and producer of the film "Wedding" Ms. Magdalena Ralcheva for the opportunity to present new Bulgarian cinema before the Canadian audience.
