On 24 March this year, the Consul General of Bulgaria in New York, Angel Angelov, was invited to speak at the legendary Rotary Club of New York No. 6—one of the oldest and most prestigious Rotary clubs in the world. The invitation came in the context of his serving, for a third consecutive year, in the elected position of Vice President of the century-old Society of Foreign Consuls in New York.
The event was held in a “Fireside Chat” format, featuring the guest and a moderator, and provided an opportunity for the Bulgarian diplomat to present his country—its history, values, and contemporary role on the international stage. Key highlights of Bulgaria’s historical legacy were emphasized, including the creation of the Cyrillic alphabet in the 9th century and the rescue of nearly 50,000 Bulgarian Jews during the Second World War. Particular emphasis was also placed on Bulgaria’s role as an active and engaged member of the European Union and NATO, supporting Ukraine and developing a strategic partnership with the United States.
During the discussion, which lasted approximately 40 minutes, the important role of Bulgarian schools and cultural organizations in the Northeastern United States was also underlined, as they help maintain a strong connection between the Bulgarian community and their homeland.
The event was attended by around 70 members of the Rotary Club. The Consul General was honored with the title of “Honorary Member” of the Rotary Club at a ceremony attended by the current President of the Club and the President-Elect.
