02 February 2023 News

On January 31, 2023, the Consul General in New York and his family represented Bulgaria in an international fair at Public School 267 in New York. Several hundred students, accompanied by their parents, visited Bulgaria's stand and learned about its rich culture and traditions.

The main theme of the Bulgarian stand was the Bulgarian alphabet, which is used by 250 million people in Eurasia. The two Bulgarian kids (5 and 11 years old) helped their classmates write their names in Bulgarian. The guests received martenitsa with the Bulgarian flag, a stamp in their "passports", a book mark with a picture of ancient gold treasures discovered in Bulgaria and with information about the exhibition at the New York University Institute for Ancient Studies entitled "Ritual and Memory: the Ancient Balkans and Beyond", which displays gold treasures discovered in Bulgaria, felt the scent of the famous Bulgarian rose, tasted Bulgarian candies, looked at the traditional Bulgarian costumes, kukeri and the Bulgarian and European flags.

Information was shared with the visitors at the Bulgarian stand about the rescue of the Bulgarian Jews during the Holocaust, about the Bulgarian yogurt, about the Bulgarian descent of the inventor of the computer and about Valya Balkanska’s song sent into space. The participation of the Bulgarian consulate was supported by members of the Bulgarian community, who shared ideas, provided national costumes, ceramic pots, tablecloths, etc.

Representatives of 22 countries took part in the international fair, which generated great interest. The director of the school, which hosted the event, expressed special gratitude to the family of the Bulgarian Consul General.
