19 April 2019 News

The President of the Republic of Bulgaria Rumen Radev visited Lebanon on April 9-10, 2019. The main objectives of the visit were to intensify the political dialogue, create a favorable environment for more active trade and investment between the two countries, voicing Bulgaria's positions on important international issues, such as the fight against international terrorism, the Middle East peace process, the need to find a solution to the problem of Syrian refugees, etc.

President Rumen Radev was officially welcomed by President Michel Aoun. A private meeting took place, followed by a plenary session of the delegations of Bulgaria and Lebanon, during which two main topics of mutual interest were discussed: the unsatisfactory state of bilateral trade and economic relations and the need to start regular direct flights between Sofia and Beirut.

During the meeting with the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament Nabih Berry the Bulgarian delegation was briefed on some of the current trends in political life in the country.

At the meeting with Prime Minister Saad Hariri a number of economic and trade co-operation issues were discussed, with particular emphasis on the opportunities for export of products of the Lebanese food industry and agriculture to Bulgaria.

President Rumen Radev participated in a business forum organized by the Embassy of Bulgaria and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Beirut and Mount Lebanon. A group of 28 Bulgarian businessmen met with Lebanese counterparts and discussed opportunities to participate in joint projects in various fields, such as improving Lebanon's infrastructure, stepping up investments in the implementation of the so called Cedar plan (2018), the forthcoming recovery of Syria’s economy, etc.

President Rumen Radev met with representatives of the Bulgarian community in Lebanon - Bulgarian citizens who have families and live permanently in Lebanon as well as Lebanese citizens who received their education or worked in Bulgaria. The Association of the Lebanese Graduates of Bulgarian Universities was a co-organizer of the event which was hosted by the Municipality of Hazmieh. Mr. Radev also put a wreath at the Martyrs Memorial downtown Beirut.

On April 10 the delegation visited the city of Byblos - one of the five sites in Lebanon included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
