The Lady in Violet

On November 15, 2019 the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria organized an exhibition of the Bulgarian artist Olga Shehanova-Shishkova.

Olga Shehanova was the wife of the Secretary of the Bulgarian Consulate in Helsinki (1937-1939) and one of the first Bulgarian female artists. During her stay in Finland, she opened several solo exhibitions in Helsinki, Vyborg, Turku and Pori, the first of which was in honoured by the then President of the country, P. E. Svinhufvud. To this day, her painting ‘The Lady in Violet’ is in possession of the Satakunnan Museo in Pori. In the late 1970s, 162 paintings by Shehanova were donated by her husband to the Nikola Marinov Art Gallery in Targovishte. They served as a nucleus of the Helsinki exhibition opened in the presence of the Director of the Targovishte Art Gallery Mr. Prodanov, ambassadors, Metropolitan of Helsinki, Director of the State Protocol, representatives of the cultural and political elite as well as Bulgarians living in Finland. A special bilingual catalog was also published, presenting two academic studies dedicated to the life and artistic work of Olga Shehanova-Shishkova.
