01 November 2023 News

On October 28, 2023, in Montreal, Quebec, a festive performance was held to mark the 60th anniversary of Mr. Tsonko Stoyanov and the 10th anniversary of the founding of the Folk Dance Club "Trakiya". Mr. Stoyanov is the founder and chief choreographer of the “Bulgari” folk ensemble and one of the founders of the “Trakiya” Club. The concert was entitled "Let's preserve the traditions" and aimed at popularizing our cultural heritage and preserving the original Bulgarian traditions among our compatriots abroad.

The performance was marked by strong interest and a full concert hall at College Jean-de-Brébeuf in Montreal. Within two hours and to a stormy ovation, numerous folk groups from Canada and the USA presented traditional Bulgarian performances. It was organized in a highly professional manner and was held only a month after the Festival of Bulgarian needlework "Kanatitsa" in Vancouver, where Bulgarian folk groups from both USA and Canada gathered and presented their performances with great success.

At the Montreal concert the following ensembles and folklore formations performed:  Club "Trakiya" (Montreal), "Ludo Mlado" (Boston), "Zornitsa" (Montreal), "Vereya" (Chicago), "Sedem Osmi" (Boston), "Bulgari" (Montreal), "Zlatna Trakiya" (Toronto), "Shumak" brass orchestra (Montreal), "Horo" (Chicago) and the Moldovan dance ensemble "Vatra" (Montreal).

As the guest of honor at the event, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Bulgaria to Canada Mr. Plamen Georgiev addressed the attendees with congratulations on behalf of the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria in Ottawa and the Consulate General of the Republic of Bulgaria in Toronto. He pointed out that the two events in 2023 - the Jubilee concert "Let's preserve the traditions" in Montreal and the Festival of Bulgarian needlework "Kanatitsa" in Vancouver - should be regarded as symbolic and very strong patriotic message to all Bulgarians in North America and beyond, and above all - as a demonstration of the reviving Bulgarian spirit.

On the occasion of his 60th anniversary and in recognition of the many years of his tireless work for the preservation of the Bulgarian customs and the development of the Bulgarian culture abroad, Mr. Tsonko Stoyanov was presented a Bulgarian state award - the "Ivan Vazov" memorial medal, granted by the Executive Agency for the Bulgarians Abroad with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria.

Also, on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the founding of the "Trakiya" Folk Dance Club, Ambassador Georgiev presented its founder, Mr. Tsonko Stoyanov, with an Honorary Plaque, also provided by the Executive Agency for the Bulgarians Abroad with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Republic of Bulgaria.
