Ambassador Karadjova delivered a statement during the United Nations General Assembly debate on the use of the veto, focusing on the mandate of the Panel of Experts established pursuant to Security Council resolution 1929 in support of the Sanctions Committee established pursuant to resolution 1737.
Ambassador Karadjova underscored the importance of effective, independent and fact-based monitoring and reporting on the implementation of relevant Security Council resolutions concerning sanctions related to Iran’s nuclear programme.
Bulgaria expressed serious concern over the removal of the independent monitoring and reporting mechanism for sanctions violations, particularly in light of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) recent findings regarding the loss of continuity of knowledge concerning Iran’s nuclear material stocks and its enrichment capabilities.
Bulgaria reaffirmed its firm position that Iran must not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons and called on Iran to fully comply with its legally binding obligations under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and its Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement with the IAEA.
