Ambassador Gergana Karadjova Participated in the Second Regular Session of the Executive Board of UN Women

18 September 2026 News

The role of UN Women is more important than ever. We reaffirm our strong support for the Entity’s unique triple mandate – in the areas of normative support, coordination across the UN system, and operational support to countries.

Ambassador Gergana Karadjova made this clear in her statement during the Second Regular Session of the Executive Board of UN Women.

She welcomed the progress achieved in advancing gender equality, despite an increasingly complex global environment marked by conflicts, economic uncertainty, climate-related crises, and growing pressures on the multilateral system.

The Ambassador also underscored the importance of the meaningful participation of young women, the responsible use of technology to advance gender equality, and support for women-led organizations and civil society.

Against the backdrop of the ongoing discussions on the UN80 Initiative, Bulgaria stressed that reforms should strengthen the effectiveness and coherence of the UN’s gender equality architecture, while fully preserving the distinct mandate and normative role of UN Women.

Ambassador Karadjova also highlighted the importance of predictable and flexible funding, which is essential for UN Women’s ability to deliver on its mandate, particularly in humanitarian and crisis settings.

Bulgaria will continue its constructive cooperation with UN Women, the Executive Board and the Executive Director towards the successful implementation of the Strategic Plan 2026–2029.
