17 March 2026 NewsAmbassador Gergana Karadjova participated in a High-Level Meeting dedicated to addressing violence against women and girls. The event took place within the framework of the 70th session of the Commission on the Status of Women.
In her speech, Bulgaria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations emphasized the need to accelerate the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action is a key international framework for gender equality, adopted in 1994. Ambassador Karadjova highlighted the need for stronger prevention measures, support mechanisms for victims, accountability for conflict-related sexual violence, and the responsible use of technology.
During the high-level meeting, ministers, ambassadors, and experts exchanged experiences, best practices, and challenges related to preventing and combating gender-based violence. Within the discussions, one of the main objectives was to accelerate the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action through:
- discussing legislative reforms;
- providing support for victims;
- developing cross-sectoral policies;
- ensuring adequate funding to address one of the most widespread human rights violations affecting women and girls worldwide.
