Culture and traditions of the Bulgarian Jews

On February 22, 2020, the Bulgarian Embassy in Washington, D.C. participated in an event dedicated to the history and traditions of the Bulgarian Jews, which was held at the Magen David Sephardic Congregation Synagogue in Rockville, Maryland.

In his opening remarks Ambassador Tihomir Stoytchev presented interesting facts about history and traditions of Jewish people in Bulgaria. He emphasized the historic rescue of almost 50 000 Bulgarian Jews during the SHOA.

Mr. Yosef Benatov, professor at the University of Pennsylvania, was the keynote speaker who gave a presentation on the origin and historical development of the Bulgarian Jewish community.

The cultural evening ended with a folklore program performed by the Folk Dance Ensemble „Pendari“ at the Hristo Botev Academy in Washington, D.C.
