The World Health Assembly closed its 74th session with 16 resolutions and 21 decisions

The 74th session of the World Health Assembly closed on May 31. More than 30 resolutions and decisions were adopted in various areas of public health, including ending violence against children, mental health during public health emergencies, nursing and midwifery, social determinants of health, strategic directions for the health and care workforce, local production of medicines,  diabetes,  eye care and ect. Of particular importance for this session was the outlining of guidelines for further strengthening the organization and analysis of the consequences of the current pandemic in order to better prepare and respond more effectively in future public health emergencies.

In his closing remarks to the Assembly, the Director-General of the WHO, Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus, emphasized the need for countries to to commit to supporting the targets to achieve vaccination of at least 10% of the population of all countries by the end of September, and at least 30% by the end of the year. He pointed out that actions should be taken to strengthen the organization, but also the global health security, incl. by considering possible new international instruments. He reiterated that a strong WHO must be adequately funded and countries must chart a course to a sustainable financial model.
