On 13 May 2026, Ambassador Angel Bandjov met with Kate Forbes, President of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).
During the meeting, the parties discussed the main priorities of IFRC, including the protection of the rights of women and girls in situations of crisis and conflict. Ambassador Bandjov presented Bulgaria’s initiative for an optional protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child concerning free primary and secondary education, underlining the importance of access to education for equality and democratic development.
Ms Forbes highly praised the work of the Bulgarian Red Cross and its Director, Prof. Dr. Sofia Stoimenova, highlighting the organization’s role in assisting Ukrainian refugees and its significant institutional capacity. She also stressed the importance of national Red Cross societies as auxiliary bodies to public authorities.
