12 February 2021 News

At the Special session in the Human Rights Council, convened urgently on 12 February to address the political crisis in Myanmar, the Permanent representative of Bulgaria, H. E. Ambassador Yuri Sterk, stated the position of Bulgaria in support of the democratic transition, national reconciliation and accountability for human rights violations in Myanmar. In line with the statement made by the European Union, the Bulgarian diplomat condemned the seizure of power by the military and the arbitrary detention of prominent political leaders, representing the democratically elected civilian government, as well as the use by police of excessive and lethal force against protesting people in the capital and other cities. Ambassador Sterk also conveyed Bulgaria’s call for the unconditional release of political leaders, public figures, human rights defenders, journalists and activists who have been arbitrary detained. The Permanent representative of Bulgaria further called for the end of the state of emergency and for the restoration of power of the legitimate civilian government in Myanmar.
