Information for the Bulgarian citizens permanently living in Greece

05 January 2011 News

In connection with the frequent penalties imposed on Bulgarian citizens in Greece, using vehicles with Bulgarian registration plates, the Foreign Ministry informs:

Our compatriots residing temporarily in the Republic of Greece as guests or tourists can use vehicles with Bulgarian registration plates on its territory within 185 days per year (i.e. six months) in accordance with Decree 247/1988 A.Y.O.

The permanently residing in Greece Bulgarian citizens- with tax registration (A.F.M.) and Social Security (I.K.A.) are required to register their personal vehicles according to local legislation. Failure to do so is considered a customs violation for which the penalties are immobilization of the vehicle or imposition of fines.

We urge the Bulgarian citizens who do not have a permanent residence abroad and are staying in Greece for a period exceeding six months to bear this information in mind and to register their personal motor vehicles in the relevant Greek authorities.

We also recommend the Bulgarian citizens to inform themselves in advance for each individual case from the Consular representations of Greece to Bulgaria and of Bulgaria to Greece.
