Minister Daniel Mitov confers with EU Foreign Affairs High Representative Federica Mogherini

14 March 2016 News

Minister Daniel Mitov conferred today in Brussels with the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, ahead of the regular meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council. During the talks, the two discussed the migration crisis and agreed on the need of joint efforts to cope with the challenges arising from it. Part of these efforts should be rendering support by the EU to the front-line countries, including Bulgaria, as well as taking urgent measures to prevent redirecting migration flows.

The chief Bulgarian diplomat again presented his country's position on the subject, set forth in the letter of Prime Minister Boyko Borissov to European Council President Donald Tusk in connection with the negotiations on the EU-Turkey agreement, which is expected to be finalized at the forthcoming summit. For her part, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy stressed that, as an immediate neighbour of Turkey, Bulgaria has an important role in the shaping of the common EU position and its opinion is taken into account at each stage of the decision-making process.

During the talks, Minister Daniel Mitov presented ideas of joint initiatives during the Bulgarian Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe and invited Federica Mogherini to attend the Committee of Ministers session that will take place in Sofia on March 18.
