Тhe Embassy of Bulgaria in Baku celebrated the 1st of March together with SOS Children’s Villages Azerbaijan. The children made the holiday very special by performing traditional Bulgarian and Azerbaijani dances, preparing Bulgarian and local dishes and organizing a Martenitsa workshop.

SOS Children’s Villages are a beneficiary of a Bulgarian Development aid grant. The project “Bulgaria cares” aims to improve the quality of the education of 200 children through promoting children’s rights, supporting their individual development and social inclusion, and creating a motivating environment.

This year the Bulgarian Baba Marta holiday coincides with the celebration of the Fire Tuesday, one of the four festive Tuesdays before the Novruz Holiday.

A parallel can be made between the two holidays as they are both related to the beginning of spring. It is believed that Martenitsas bring health, happiness and long life and the fire is seen as a symbol of purity and cleansing.
