26 September 2019 News

The Bulgarian Embassy in Stockholm took part, according to tradition, in the celebration of the European Day of the Languages in the Swedish capital. The day, dedicated to the diversity of the languages of the Member States of the Council of Europe, was celebrated on September 24th, 2019, in the Representation of the European Parliament and the European Commission in Stockholm. The aim of the annual European Day of the Languages is to promote the official languages and alphabets of the Member States of the Council of Europe among Swedish students, young people and the general public. Along with the widespread European languages, such as German, Spanish and French, the European Day of the Languages in Stockholm enabled the young public in Stockholm to get to know more about languages like Bulgarian, Greek, Estonian, Latvian, Icelandic, Dutch, Hungarian, Georgian, Esperanto, Romanian, Ukrainian, etc.

The event was attended by more than 700 young people, students and citizens, who took part in a variety of interactive language games and quizzes. The high levels of public interest prompted the Swedish radio P4 to broadcast live from the event. In a special radio report, the audience of the public radio station had the opportunity to hear and feel how the different European languages sound, including the Bulgarian language.

The Bulgarian stand presented not only the Bulgarian language and culture but also the country’s nature variety. The map of Bulgaria’s flora and fauna evoked strong interest among the public. The visitors had the opportunity to write their names with the Cyrillic letters, to complete a quiz about Bulgaria and to taste Bulgarian treats. All visitors of the Bulgarian stand who correctly solved the quiz were awarded Т-shirts with the Bulgarian alphabet.
