Defence Minister Anu Anguelov: "NATO Missile Defence needs to be equally effective for all Member States"

14 September 2011 News

At the formal Meeting of NATO Defence Ministers, held in Brussels on 8th and 9th of June 2011, NATO missile defence (MD) was one of the main themes. The Bulgarian side reaffirmed its understanding of the indivisibility of security in NATO and the provision of equally effective missile defence (MD) of the territory of the Member States.

In his intervention during the working lunch with the partners participating in the Operation Unified Protector, Minister Anguelov pointed out that in the short-term NATO should keep on protecting Libyan citizens from attacks and should continue enforcing the arms embargo and the no-fly zone, in implementation of UNSCR 1970 and 1973. In the long-term, a possible role to be played by NATO will depend on the future political processes to take place in Libya. Taking into account the need to enhance NATO HQs leading the operation, Bulgaria announced its plans to provide five officers to the relevant HQs.

The programme of the meeting also included: a session of the NATO-Russia Council, dedicated to the possibilities for cooperation and its potential to contribute to greater transparency, mutual trust, and security; a meeting of the Nuclear Planning Group (NPG); a session dedicated to Smart Defence and a session with ISAF partners.

At the meeting the Ministers of Defence approved a new, more compact and effective command structure of NATO, and a reform of NATO agencies.
