16/06/26

On the eve of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, the Heads of the Missions of the EU member states and the EU Delegation in Washington donated a collection of 28 books to the Library of Congress, one from each EU member state and one from the EU Delegation.

The books are in English, each accompanied by a message from the Head of Mission. At the ceremony at the Library of Congress on 4 June, the Bulgarian Embassy was represented by Ms. Stefka Yovcheva, Chargé d’Affaires ad interim.

Bulgaria is participating with the novel *Time Refuge* by Georgi Gospodinov, translated into English by Angela Rodel, which won the International Booker Prize in 2023. The book was provided with the assistance of the State Institute for Culture to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the “America” Directorate at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The joint initiative is titled “Words That Unite, Stories That Connect” \EU Ambassadors Book Collection: Words That Unite, Stories That Connect\. A copy of Georgi Gospodinov’s novel was also provided for a specially curated library at the EU Delegation in Washington. A third copy was donated for the so-called “Traveling Library,” which, through literary readings, will introduce European literature to American audiences in various U.S. states.
