Exhibition "Caught in a Spiral" by Nobuko Ueda - Sofia Paper Art Fest 2024

21/08/24

The Mission Gallery, part of the State Institute for Culture at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria, is pleased to host the sixth exhibition of the Sofia Paper Art Fest 2024, which will take place from September 2 to 13, 2024. The official opening will be held on September 2 (Monday) at 6:00 PM.

This year's autumn panel of the festival is dedicated to three significant anniversaries in the bilateral relations between Bulgaria and Japan – 115 years since the first official contacts, 85 years since the establishment, and 65 years since the restoration of diplomatic relations between the two countries. As part of the 35th Days of Japanese Culture in Bulgaria, the Sofia Paper Art Fest 2024 will present five exhibitions of contemporary Japanese paper art.

The first exhibition will be presented at the Mission Gallery and will feature the solo exhibition "Caught in a Spiral" by Nobuko Ueda, who was awarded the Innovation Prize in the 2020 Amateras Annual Paper Art Competition. The exhibition consists of a collection of sculptures and reliefs that create a unified organism, immersing the viewer in the atmosphere of Japanese aesthetics, known for its minimalism and refinement.

Sculptor Nobuko Ueda draws inspiration from ancient basket weaving techniques, which she transforms into exquisitely designed sculptures, impressive with their virtuosity and finesse. Working with spiral structures, Ueda uses recycled paper strips, allowing her to express the symbolism of creation through the spiral.

The exhibition will be opened by H.E. Mr. Michigami Hisashi, Ambassador of Japan to Bulgaria, in the presence of Nobuko Ueda, who will arrive especially for the event.

The event is organized by the Amateras Foundation in co-operation with the Embassy of Japan and the State Institute for Culture, and with financial support from the "Visual Arts" program of the Ministry of Culture, the "Creation '23" program of the National Culture Fund, and the Calendar of Cultural Events of Sofia Municipality for 2024.

The exhibition can be visited from Monday to Friday, between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
