Presentation of the collection “Shifting Identities: Bulgaria and Europe” in London
On 30 November 2010, the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria in London hosted the presentation of the book “Shifting Identities: Bulgaria and Europe”. The collection includes monographs by leading scholars in this area, and is a follow-up of the conference “Being European: Bulgaria and Europe, Past, Present, Future” organised by University College London (UCL) School of Slavonic and East European Studies in 2004. The event was organised jointly with the Goldsmiths Balkans Centre. The presentation of the collection was accompanied with a discussion on the subject. Three of the authors of the collection participated in the discussion. These were Dr. Stefanos Katsikas, Dr. Marietta Stankova and Dr. Vassilis Monastiriotis, where the presentations by Dr. Monastiriotis offered a wider historical, social and political context to the development of relations between Bulgaria and Europe from the end of the 19th century to our days. Ambassador Lyubomir Kyuchukov pointed out that European integration is a process, which does not begin or end with the act of the country’s accession to the European Union. Furthermore, he underlined the importance of the EU enlargement for the integration of the continent and for expanding the area of peace, stability and prosperity in Europe.
