On the occasion of the Independence Day of Bulgaria – 22 September, the exhibition “Ancient Treasures of Bulgaria” was presented at the Bulgarian Residence in Oslo, showcasing the country’s rich cultural and historical heritage to a Norwegian audience and representatives of the international diplomatic community.

The exhibition was part of an official reception hosted by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Bulgaria to the Kingdom of Norway, H.E. Ms Desislava Ivanova, bringing together high-level representatives of Norwegian institutions, the diplomatic corps, the business community and the Bulgarian community in Norway.

“Ancient Treasures of Bulgaria” was created by a team of scholars from the Institute of Balkan Studies with Centre of Thracology “Prof. Alexander Fol” at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, coordinated by Assistant Professor Dr Alexandra Milanova. The exhibition is presented abroad with the support of the State Institute for Culture under the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria.

Through a selection of photographic reproductions, the exhibition presents some of the most valuable examples of Bulgaria’s ancient heritage, including gold and silver artefacts from the Panagyurishte, Borovo and Valchitran Treasures, as well as a number of other internationally renowned archaeological discoveries. The selected artefacts reveal the artistic achievements, cultural interactions and rich heritage of the civilisations that have shaped the history of the Bulgarian lands.

The presentation of the exhibition in Oslo provided another opportunity to promote Bulgaria’s cultural heritage in an international context and to reaffirm the role of culture as a space for dialogue between Bulgaria and its international partners.

During the event, Ambassador Ivanova highlighted the historical significance of Bulgaria’s declaration of independence in 1908, as well as the importance of the longstanding friendship and cooperation between Bulgaria and Norway. Mr Erik Mathisen, Deputy Director General for Europe at the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, congratulated Bulgaria on its national day and underlined the positive development of bilateral relations.

The cultural programme of the evening also featured a performance by distinguished Bulgarian pianist and Honorary Consul of Bulgaria in Stavanger Mr Kiril Kutin, who performed, among other works, “Dilmano Dilbero. Variations” by Bulgarian composer Alexander Vladigerov.
