In response to the urgent UN appeal for the reconstruction of Haiti and to the appeal of UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova to the Organisation’s Member States to finance the crisis restoring of the educational system of Haiti, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Nickolay Mladenov approved the provision of financial support amounting to USD 100,000 out of the Bulgarian Trust Fund at UNESCO.
This amount is to be used to finance three UNESCO projects for Haiti in the sphere of education: crisis restoring of the education in schools, support to the national institutions for education and psychological support through training of teachers, estimated at a total of USD 1.9 million.
The Trust Fund of the Republic of Bulgaria at UNESCO was established with Decision No. 307 of 11 December 2008 of the Council of Ministers for gratuitous financing of projects in the spheres of education, cultural diversity and tolerance for the countries of Sub-Saharan Africa, as well as for post-conflict countries and small island states.
The contributions to the Fund constitute part of the Bulgaria’s official development assistance.
