Ekaterina Zaharieva to present Bulgarian Presidency’s priorities in the field of development and humanitarian aid before the respective committee of the European Parliament

Deputy Prime Minister for the judicial reform and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria presents today the priorities of the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the EU in the field of development cooperation and humanitarian aid before the members of the European Parliament’s Committee on Development (DEVE). The hearing is part of the inter-institutional dialogue between the Council and the Parliament.

During her presentation Bulgaria’s top diplomat will emphasize on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in accordance with the new European Consensus on Development and the possibilities for integration of the goals for sustainable development within the respective EU policies. In her exposé, Minister Zaharieva will examine the topic of ‘youth and development’ as a precondition for achieving sustainable development and accelerating the transformation. Another significant topic for the Bulgarian Presidency is the renewing of the partnership between the EU and the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States with regard to the expiration, in 2020, of the Cotonou Agreement.

Ekaterina Zaharieva will also present before the members of DEVE the goals of the Bulgarian Presidency in the field of humanitarian aid. Our priority in this area is the strengthening of the sustainability towards crises as a key element in the EU Global Strategy, with emphasis on the necessity of binding the efforts towards development with those aimed at short-term and long-term humanitarian assistance. Minister Zaharieva will also focus on the coordinated application of the European Consensus on Humanitarian Aid and monitoring.
