Welcome to the website of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Bulgaria to the United Nations in New York.
Here, you will find information about the activities, by which the Mission, being part of the national foreign policy mechanism, contributes to Bulgaria’s participation in this unique multilateral co-operation that unites the efforts of all 193 UN Member States for the purpose set out in the UN Charter – to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war.
For over 60 years of membership to this Organization Bulgaria has been contributing to this lofty UN purpose through initiatives, including as part of the EU's overall efforts, related to all three pillars of the United Nations - international peace and security, sustainable development and human rights. With the appointment of the 9th UN Secretary-General Mr. António Guterres, to the efforts of the Organization and its Member States were given further impetus by the Secretary General's vision for "surge in diplomacy for peace" and its core element – making prevention the priority which flows through all three pillars of the United Nations.
Bulgaria’s participation in the UN peacekeeping operations, such as the United Nations Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) and the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), the support we provide to the UN's preventive diplomacy through the Group of Friends of Mediation, the strict implementation of the UN Security Council sanctions regimes as well as of the commitments under the international arms control and non-proliferation regimes, which we are Party to, the participation in the UN-coordinated efforts to counter terrorism and violent extremism, all these efforts testify for the Bulgaria’s contribution to the activities of the United Nations aimed at maintaining international peace and security.
The implementation of the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015 has been set out as objective in the National Mid-Term Development Assistance and Humanitarian Assistance Program of Bulgaria for the period 2016-2019. This strategic document also outlines the ever-increasing participation of Bulgaria in the international efforts to prevent and relieve humanitarian crises, including through the formulation of a comprehensive approach of the United Nations that takes into account all aspects and dimensions of the large-scale movements of migrants and refugees.
Protection of human rights, respect for the international law and strengthening of the rule of law are also priorities of Bulgaria as Member of the United Nations and as State Party to a significant number of relevant international treaties concluded under the aegis of the United Nations. Bulgaria was the Chair of the Third Committee (human rights, social, humanitarian and cultural affairs) during the 68th Session of the UN General Assembly and currently holds the position of Chair of the Conference of the States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and of co-Chair of the Group of Friends of Children.
Bulgaria supports the Secretary General's efforts for further increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of the Organization by introducing improved financial and administrative performance measures and as a Member of the Committee on Program and Coordination for the term 2018-2020 Bulgaria will do its best to assist in the implementation of the reforms needed in this area.
I hope that by the information contained here on the Bulgarian participation in the United Nations we will make your visit pleasurable and useful!
