Emilia I. Stefanova-Veleva
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Bulgaria tothe Commonwealth of Australia and New Zealand
Ms Emilia Stefanova-Veleva joins the Bulgarian Diplomatic Service in 1992.
She has a Master’s degree in Spanish Philology and Psychology (Cum Laude) from the Sofia University Saint Clement Ohridsky (1977-1982).
Also graduatedin International Relations from the Spanish Diplomatic School(1994-1995).
Has attended a Professional Course for Diplomats in theForeign Service Institute in New Delhi, India (2006).
Her first professional experience is as a Professor in Spanish at the Iberoromanic Philology Cathedra ofthe Sofia University Saint Clement Ohridsky(1982-1986) and at the Language Centre of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1984-1992).
She has also worked as an Interpreter, News Speaker and Correspondent at the Spanish Section of the Bulgarian National Radio.
Founding member of the Hispanics Association in Bulgaria.
In 2002 has been an Elections Observer in Kosovo as member of OSCE Missions.
Her diplomatic work at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been mainly dedicated to the Latin American countries and Canada.
In 2013 - 2014 she has been heading the Latin American Department.
Ms Stefanova-Veleva has been Deputy Head of Mission in Caracas (1996-1997) and Ottawa (2007-2010).
Head of the Embassy of Bulgaria in Havana (1997-2001) in the capacity of Chargé d’Affairesa.i.
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Bulgaria tothe Commonwealth of Australia since 2014 and non-resident Ambassador to New Zealand since 2015.
Fluent in Spanish and English, has a working knowledge of Russian and Portuguese.
